अ‍ॅन्डालुसिया इथल्या सॅन्टिआगो नावाच्या एका मेंढपाळाची ही कथा आहे. स्पेनमधल्या त्याच्या जन्मभूमीपासून इजिप्तच्या वाळवंटापर्यंतचा त्याचा हा प्रवास आपल्या मनाचा तळ ढवळून काढतो. पिरॅमिड्सजवळ लपवलेल्या खजिन्याच्या शोधात निघालेल्या सॅन्टिआगोला प्रवासात एक जिप्सी स्त्री, स्वतःला राजा म्हणवून घेणारा वयोवृद्ध आणि एक किमयागार भेटतो. प्रत्येक जण या तरुणाला योग्य दिशा दाखवतो. तथापि, खजिना नेमका काय आहे हे कोणालाच माहीत नसतं. वाटेत येणार्‍या अडथळ्यांवर तरुण यशस्वीपणे मात करू शकेल का हेसुद्धा कोणाला सांगता येत नाही. भौतिक वस्तूंच्या शोधार्थ निघालेल्या सॅन्टिआगोला स्वतःच्या अंतरंगात दडलेल्या खजिन्याचा शोध लागतो. मानवतेच्या गाभ्याला स्पर्श करणारी अशी ही उत्कट आणि प्रेरक कथा आहे.
